In January1812, he received his Warrant as a Midshipment, United States Navy, from President Madison. He served on numerous ships including the Constellation, Brandywine, Erie, and Vandalia. He was a Lieutenant in the United States Navy in 1820. He was a United States Navy Commander in 1841. He was a Captain in the United States Navy circa 1850.
