Have you visited the Governor’s Room in the Meredith House? A
resolution supporting the creation of this room was passed by the Dorchester
County Historical Society in 1960. Here is that resolution:
Cambridge,
Md.
Sept.
19, I960
A
Resolution passed by the Dorchester County Historical Society and accepted
as part of its official program.
In
creating a committee to further the establishment of a "Governor's Room"
in Meredith House, certain definite objectives were suggested by the Dorchester
County Historical Society -
(1)
Such a room would memorialize the seven Governors of Maryland provided
by Dorchester County, the character, the ability and established record
of which distinguished them both in the State and in the Nation.
(2)
The room would become the depositary of records and objects made available
by the descendants, institutions, societies and public-spirited citizens,
from whom, directly and thru purchase, they may be provided.
The
purchase of valuable items for the room by the Society, as deemed feasible,
was suggested, subject to funds being made available thru gifts or other
sources.
(3)
The Governor's Room is intended, first, to recognize the outstanding contribution
of Dorchester County to the leadership of Maryland thru its distinguished
sons who have occupied the highest public office in the gift of the people
of the State. Second, the Society hopes that by locating and preserving
papers, records, relics and other pertinent materials and objects of the
Governors under one roof, further dissipation will be avoided. Third, a
depositary of the kind under consideration would not only preserve the
records made available, but might well afford an opportunity for the descendants,
students of history and those interested in genealogy to further their
studies and research.
