The new structure provides approximately 5,000 square feet on two floors of combined display, office and storage space at a cost of nearly $600,000. This facility is named after local contributors William D. (Dave) and Polly Robbins. A state bond bill sponsored by Delegate Addie Eckardt and Sen. Richard Colburn, both Dorchester County Republicans, provided a matching grant of $250,000.
The Robbins Heritage Center joins the Neild Museum, the Goldsborough Stable and the Meredith House on the grounds of La Grange Plantation at the end of Maryland Avenue. Together, they will provide the visitors a modern and spacious museum complex from which to trace the history of Dorchester County through a variety of displays and interactive presentations.
Work will soon begin on creating the exhibits that will be placed on display in the new facility and a nature trail and dock for water access are next on the schedule.
The first major event to be held in the Robbins Center, “America by Food,” conducted in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, is well under way and on track for a scheduled February 2008..
